국립현대미술관은 한국 근현대미술을 대표하는 화가 이대원의 최초 대규모 회고전 《이대원: 당신을 슬프게 하는 것은 하나도 없다》를 개최한다. 이대원(1921–2005)은 ‘화단의 신사’, ‘색채의 마법사’, ‘세상에서 가장 행복한 화가’라는 수식어와 함께 과수원과 산, 연못을 원색의 점과 선으로 채운 작품으로 익히 알려져 온 작가로 밝음이 작가의 타고난 낙천성으로 해석되어 왔다. 이번 전시에서는 생동감 넘치고 명랑한 색채가 작가의 기질 때문이라는 해석을 넘어 한국의 전통 공예와 동양화의 조형 원리를 오래 연구하고 화면 안에서 변용해 얻은 작가의 회화적 성취임을 새롭게 조명한다. 총 4부로 구성된 전시는 이대원의 학창 시절 초기 작품부터 말년의 대형 〈농원〉 연작에 이르기 까지 유화 120여 점과 아카이브 100여 점, 작가수집 고미술품 및 자료를 통해 약 70년에 거친 그의 화업을 총체적으로 볼 수 있다.
The MMCA presents 《LEE Daiwon: Nothing Here Makes You Sad》, the first large-scale retrospective devoted to LEE Daiwon. Dubbed the “gentleman of the art scene,” “magician of color,” and “happiest painter in the world,” LEE Daiwon(1921–2005) has long been known for his canvases of orchards, mountains, and ponds rendered in vivid points and lines of primary color, with his luminosity generally read as an expression of an innately sunny disposition. Moving beyond the assumption that the artist’s vibrant, buoyant palettearose simply from temperament, this exhibition reframes this vibrancy as a painterly achievement built through years of sustained study of Korean traditional craft and the formal principles of East Asian painting. Organized into four sections, the exhibition surveys roughly 70 years of LEE’s career, from his earliest, student-era works to the monumental Farm series of his later years, presenting around 120 oil paintings alongside approximately 100 archival items, antique artworks, and documents from the artist’s collection.
