30여 년간 국제 미술계에서 이어져 온 구정아의 여정은 2024년 제60회 베네치아 비엔날레 한국관을 거쳐, 국내 최대 규모의 개인전 《구정아: 우스모스》로 개최된다. 1990년대 초기작부터 리움미술관을 위해 제작한 신작까지 약 35점의 작품은 M2 전시실을 넘어 로비와 고미술 상설전시실, M2 창밖의 옹벽 틈까지 미술관 곳곳에 전시된다.
구정아는 익숙한 공간을 낯설게 만들며 평소 의식하지 않았던 것을 발견하게 한다. 구정아의 작업은 눈앞에 완성된 오브제로 주어지기보다 관람자의 주의와 우연한 발견을 통해 서서히 모습을 드러낸다. 시간이 지나면서 재료와 형식은 달라졌지만, 쉽게 지나치는 것을 다시 바라보게 하고 익숙한 세계를 다르게 경험하도록 하는 구정아의 태도는 변하지 않았다. 이번 전시는 서로 다른 시기와 형태로 흩어져 있던 작업들을 만나게 함으로써, 구정아가 지난 30여 년 동안 지속해 온 질문을 오늘의 시점에서 다시 읽는 자리다.
An active figure on the international art scene for over thirty years, KOO Jeong-a, whose journey includes the presentation at the Korean Pavilion of the 60th Venice Biennale in 2024, arrives in Seoul with the artist’s largest solo exhibition in Korea to date. Ranging from the early works of the 1990s to newly commissioned works for Leeum, approximately 35 works seep into every corner of the museum. They extend beyond the M2 galleries to the lobby, the traditional Korean art galleries, and the gabion walls.
KOO turned to easily overlooked objects and their relationships with invisible forces. KOO’s work emerged gradually through the viewer’s attention and chance encounters, rather than presenting itself as a complete object before the eye.
By bringing together works from different periods and in different forms, OUSSSMOS becomes an occasion to reread, from the perspective of today, the questions KOO has sustained over the past thirty years.
